In chapter 17, The whole village is moarning because of the death of the boys. Becky is really upset, and regretted what how she acted in her last moments with Tom. All the kids at school were arguing because they all said they were the ones to see them last, as they all remembered stories about Tom and Joe. Then , the little church was crowded with people, all moarning as they listened to the minister tell stories about how "caring the boys have been. Then suddenly, the three boys appeared walking down the aisle of the church, and Aunt Polly, Mary, Sid and the Harper Family ruched to hug and kiss Tom and Joe, and afterwards Huck too. Everyone was surprised to see them, and the whole church was celebrating that the three boys were alive.
Tom was hugged and kissed by his family and everyone was so happy to see him, as well as Joe. But sadly, no one showed much interest for Huck.
The last line in the chapter: "And he hardly knew which expressed the most gratefulness for god and affection for himself" means that Tom was unsure which kisses Aunt Polly gave him showing him affection and gladness, and which ones shoewed only affection and gratitude towards God. Yet both expressed great happiness for the fact that he was alive, but, ones were to show God how grateful she was for having his nephey alive and with her, and the other ones to show the eagerness and happiness to Tom himself.
